Air Selangor committed to improving the quality of water supply services in the state via continuous investment

As the largest economy region in Malaysia, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya has become an “investment paradise” with its major industrial cluster infrastructure, investment environment and the support from state government. Air Selangor plays a key role in this process, providing households and businesses with the sustainable water resources they need.

Air Selangor’s commitment is not only to supply sustainable water resources, but also to support Selangor’s economic development. So, to achieve this goal, it is imperative to ensure that the infrastructure is at the highest level to ensure the reliability, stability and sustainability of the water supply.

Create value for 9.1 million consumers

Continuous investment is the key to infrastructure excellence. Through continuous investment, Air Selangor has upgraded and improved its infrastructure and system in order to ensure clean and safe treated water is provided to everyone. These initiatives bring new life to 9.1 million consumers in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.

With ongoing projects, issues faced by residents such as low water pressure and water supply disruptions have been improved.

Air Selangor maintains and operates a pipeline of over 30 thousand km, equivalent to a round trip from KL to New York City. So far, Air Selangor has replaced more than 600 kilometers of pipes which are equivalent to nearly 10% of the 6,000 kilometers of aging pipes that need to be replaced. These investments have resulted in significant results.

Air Selangor achieved a Pipe Burst Index (PBI) of 5.35 pipe burst cases per 100 kilometres, lower than the PBI international benchmark of 13 pipe burst cases per 100 kilometres. Compared with 2016, the pipe burst index (PBI) in 2022 has been reduced by 75%. According to the Acting Chief Executive Officer of Air Selangor, Ir. Abas Abdullah, with the reduction of PBI, water supply disruptions can be reduced to a minimum level and therefore providing consumers with an efficient water supply.

Improve Customer Experience

He added that with continuous investment, water service providers can better allocate funds to improve water treatment plants, expand distribution networks, reduce non-revenue water rates, and implement more advanced and efficient technologies to improve customer experience.

“This will ultimately help to improve service levels, consistent water quality standards and reduce water disruptions,” he said.

Promote multiple improvement projects

In order to meet future water supply needs and increase water reserve margin, Air Selangor has taken a number of measures to increase water supply capacity while meeting consumers’ demand for clean and safe treated water supply.

The first phase of Skim Bekalan Air Rasau is currently underway by Air Selangor and is expected to be completed by 2025. It will add up to 700 million liters of water per day to approximately 467,000 accounts in Klang and some parts of Kuala Langat region.

In addition, the second phase of Skim Bekalan Air Rasau, which has a water supply capacity of 700 million liters per day is expected to be completed in 2030. The investment amounts for these two projects are RM3.42 billion and RM2.12 billion respectively.

Not only that, Air Selangor is also planning to carry out the second phase of Langat 2 water treatment plan which is implemented by Pengurusan Aset Air Berhad (PAAB) and is expected to be completed by 2028. The production capacity is 1,130 million liters of water per day, and the total investment is approximately RM3.42 billion.

The second phase of the Skim Bekalan Air Labohan Dagang Fasa 2 water treatment plan is expected to be completed in 2029, adding an additional 200 million liters of water per day, with a total investment of approximately RM480 ​​million.

Through these projects, total water supply capacity is expected to increase from the current 6.035 billion liters per day to 8.765 billion liters per day by 2030. In addition, the total water reserve margin of Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya is also expected to increase from 11.9% to 17.7%.

“These investments will ensure sustainable water supply and quality, providing consumers with long-lasting, clean and safe treated water,” said Ir. Abas Abdullah.
